gas NOUN (pl. gases or chiefly US gasses) 1) an air-like fluid substance which expands freely to fill any space available, irrespective of its quantity. 2) a flammable substance of this type used as a fuel. 3) a gaseous anaesthetic such as nitrous oxide, used in dentistry. 4) (a gas) informal an entertaining or amusing person or thing. 5) N. Amer. informal gasoline. 6) chiefly N. Amer. flatulence. 7) Mining an explosive mixture of firedamp with air.
